Prance and Skip – Abstract on Canvas by Beverly Claridge
Abstract by Southland Artist, Beverly Claridge

Oil based medium on stretched canvas
Introduction to ‘Prance and Skip’
‘Prance and Skip’ draws inspiration from an earlier work in the ‘Moving On‘ collection, titled, ‘Gambol and Flit.‘ I wanted to evoke a sense of freedom and joy. At the same time, I aimed to capture the fluidity of life’s journey marked by moments of lightness and grace; much like the carefree movements suggested by the title.
Materials and Techniques Used
I use oil-based ink to create a rich and vibrant colour palette. Oil sticks make spontaneous and expressive marks. Caran d’Ache crayons, with their vibrant pigments, adds complexity. Layering, blending, texturing, and scraping away with my old palette knife gives a sense of movement and fluidity. I like the interplay of colour, form, and texture, which makes ‘Prance and Skip’ a key piece in the ‘Moving On’ series.
Inspiration from ‘Gambol and Flit’
I view the earlier ‘Gambol and Flit’ as a whimsical exploration of motion and change. In comparison, ‘Prance and Skip’ embodies a more refined and deliberate movement. While ‘Gambol and Flit’ relies on spontaneity and exuberance, ‘Prance and Skip’ shows a more considered perspective.
The ‘Moving On’ Series: A Contextual Overview
The ‘Moving On’ series exemplifies the fluidity and transformation inherent in the human experience. The series encapsulates themes of growth, change, and the inevitable passage of time.
My intent is for the series to communicate my own journey of change. However, I want you to find your own stories within the works. Each piece, with its distinct style and thematic focus, contributes to a richer, more nuanced understanding of what it means to move forward in life.
