‘Wabi Sabi No. 6’ which is part of my larger ‘Wabi Sabi’ collection, helps serve as my interpretation of the Japanese aesthetic that venerates the beauty of imperfection. Wabi Sabi seeks out elegance in the ephemeral and incomplete with deliberate inclusion of imperfections and irregularity. A celebration of the flawed is just what was needed as I re-entered my studio evenings in 2018, exhausted from a day of running my now closed brick and mortar.
Each piece within the collection serves as a visual homage to the harmony between nature and human experience. I created these works with multiple layers of Inktense over lines made with masking fluid. Paper damaged by removing masking fluid, were embellished with gold paint. Pigment ink pens added the finishing flourish of linear elements.
‘Wabi Sabi No. 6’ signifies a critical juncture in my creative adventure. It encapsulates the beginning of my personal journey of embracing the transient, the imperfect, and the abstract. The work inspired my later work titled, ‘Tango and Twist’. Click here to see that work.
