Hurly Burly-An Experimental Adventure

hurly burly, an exhilarating studio adventure

Hurly Burly, my latest abstract group, is forged from an experimental and exhilarating studio adventure exploring the interplay between tumult and tranquility. Characterised by bold strokes, a daring colour palette, and evocative spatial manipulation, the collection embodies the essence of my abstract journey.

Printing ink, crayon, and oil stick yield intense colour saturation, while intricate textures are achieved by scraping printing ink layers from canvas. Liquid metal leaf introduces a reflective quality, as well as complexity, and depth. Coloured pigment ink pen adds intrigue.

Tumultuous energy of 'ruckus'

“Ruckus” serves as a visual representation of my perspective on continuing my abstract journey. It is directly inspired by Rhema Meditation No. 1. The work captures the essence of tumultuous energy and discord, alluding to a cacophony of sounds and movements. In essence, it reflects the very process of creating this collection.

One challenge in creating “Ruckus” was achieving a balance between the frenetic elements and a sense of cohesion. A breakthrough came from exploring contrasts—juxtaposing light and dark, calm and fury, order and disorder.

'Hoo Hah'

“Hoo Hah” originates from a juxtaposition of chaos and tranquility. It is a derivative of “Rhema Meditation 2,” which emerged from a state of introspection and meditation. “Hoo Hah” complements “Ruckus” effectively.

Bustling 'Hubbub"

Aptly capturing the essence of a bustling and noisy environment, “Hubbub” serves as an appropriate title for this composition. Although not physically noisy, the rapid succession of ideas and decisions that surged through my mind at times was quite overwhelming. This piece is inspired by the earlier work, Rhema Meditation No. 7, which is characterised by its tranquility and contemplative nature.

What's all the 'Brouhaha"!

For Brouhaha, the repeated printing and manipulation of the canvas resulted in an unsightly work midway through. Consequently, I felt this provided ample freedom to experiment with other elements. My recklessness is evident in the manner in which I employed liquid gold leaf pen; as well as the designs and shapes created with coloured pigment pen. I am pleased with the outcome. It is derived from Rhema Meditation 8, and harmoniously complements ‘Hubbub’.

celebrate 'Hoopla'

“Hoopla” is a celebratory work, befitting its title, which embodies “a state of excited emotion or activity.”

Confetti-shaped marks of liquid gold leaf are lined and embellished with multiple layers of coloured pigment ink. Frenetic scratches with a palette knife through multiple oil-based ink layers further enhance the festive atmosphere.

This piece is inspired by Rhema Meditation No. 4.

Enter 'Imbroglio'

“Imbroglio” aptly describes a series of extraordinary, intricate, and uncommon events and resonates profoundly with my abstract journey thus far. Initially, applying vivid layers of ink appeared to yield no discernible results.

However, a pivotal moment occurred when I decided to turn the artwork upside down, approximately midway through the process. This transformative act provided a fresh perspective and renewed my determination to complete it. The work is derived from Rhema Meditation No. 6, and it harmoniously complements  “Hoopla.”

What a 'Kerfuffle'

“Kerfuffle” is a disturbance or commotion arising from a dispute or conflict, and aptly describes this piece. The application of liquid copper leaf pen elevates the composition, while touches of black and coloured pigment ink undoubtedly evoke the resulting “Kerfuffle.” Undoubtedly, “Kerfuffle” stands in stark contrast to its inspiration, Rhema Meditation No. 3.

Brilliant 'Razzmatazz'

Razzmatazz exudes unapologetic showmanship, as its name aptly suggests. A brilliant display of chroma is subtly enhanced by the application of liquid copper leaf pen. Vivid pigment ink adds a crucial rhythmic element.

All these elements harmoniously work together to prevent the action from leaping off the canvas. Razzmatazz is the culmination of an equally colourful, albeit more subdued, ‘Rhema Meditation 5’. It pairs excellently with Kerfuffle.

‘Moving On’, a Significant Studio Conquest

‘Moving On’, a significant studio conquest and personal victory, arises from a year-long dive into abstraction, after a life-time of narrative realism. Moreover, overcoming problems encountered in making the series rewarded me with even greater confidence.
