About ‘Hustle and Hum’
‘Hustle and Hum’ reflects meshing of ambition and play. This contrast is vividly expressed through using explorative technique and thoughtful use of materials I had on hand, including Dutch gold leaf, which serves as a luminous focal point, guiding the viewers eye.
Techniques and Materials: Oil-Based Multi-Media on Canvas
I found oil-based ink challenging and surprising. Oil-based printing ink provides vibrant hues, while oil-stick, crayon and scraping introduces unexpected textures and forms. Central to the piece is the juxtaposition of hustle—a representation of relentless pursuit and ambition—and hum, which signifies the subtle, often overlooked rhythms of everyday life. This duality may be the essence of the human experience, where the drive for success coexists with the need for tranquility and reflection.
Symbolism and Themes in ‘Moving On’
‘Hustle and Hum’, is from my series, ‘Moving On, which is a celebration of several things for me; overcoming difficulty and pursuing play by choosing to leap headlong into abstraction for a year (and counting). I hope the symbolism and thematic elements I used will convey messages that resonate with the viewer.
